Sustainable Management Principles

Under the sustainable management principles, the module discusses the practices that industries can adopt in order to achieve sustainability. The module is wrapped around three main presentations as follow.

  1. Good practices in chemicals management - This presentation provides good practices organized per major process step (e.g. synthesis and formulation, separation) to:
    • Improve resource efficiency for chemicals, water and energy;
    • Minimize chemical-related waste emissions, hazards and risks
  2. Secondary Raw Materials: Recycling Plastics and Polymers - This presentation provides guidance on the different types of waste management options and shows examples of how plastics and polymers can be physically recycled into new plastic products, or chemically recycled into virgin polymers and used as raw materials in the manufacture of plastic products.
  3. Resource Efficiency Benchmarks in the Chemical Industry – This presentation provides:
    • Formulas for calculating material, energy, work and plant efficiency;
    • Example resource and pollution intensity benchmarks for selected chemical subsectors;
    • Example benchmarks for chemical consumption and waste for the production of specific chemicals (e.g. polystyrene).
